MECS Definition of First Use
Consumption of Energy for All Purposes (First Use) : Unduplicated demand for energy by manufacturers. "First Use" is defined as :
- all energy produced offsite; and
- all energy produced onsite :
- either directly from captive mines and wells
- or as byproducts from nonenergy materials (such as sawdust from furniture production, hydrogen from electrolysis of brine, nut shells from peanut processing).
Not included are byproducts from feedstock use of energy. Included in consumption of energy for all purposes is net electricity which is defined as: the sum of quantities of electricity that are :
- purchased;
- transferred in; and
- generated from noncombustible renewable resources;
minus quantities of electricity that are :
- sold; and
- transferred out.
Not included are electricity inputs from onsite cogeneration, nor generation from combustible fuels, because that energy has already been included as generating fuel (coal, for example).
