(OVERLAND PARK) – Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District-KS) has released the names of area students he nominated to attend U.S. service academies. Nominations will be sent to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

“Kansas has always had a proud tradition of sending outstanding candidates on to become military leaders,” Moore said. “After reviewing this year’s group of nominees, I’m confident these young people will carry on that proud tradition. I am very pleased to do what I can to help them in developing their promising futures.”

Each of the 13 nominees demonstrates exemplary academic and leadership skills. To receive the nomination, they completed academic and physical screenings by the academies, wrote essays describing why they aspired to attend an academy and were interviewed by prominent local members of the armed forces. They will now send their applications with recommendations to their respective academies for review.

In the spring, academies will notify those students who were selected to become a part of the class of 2011. Appointees are listed by name, service academy, city of residence and school.
