Moore urges Bush to approve disaster aid request

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District – Kansas) today urged President Bush to approve Kansas Governor Bill Graves’ request for federal disaster assistance for areas of Kansas hit by last week’s ice storms.

"I’ve seen first-hand the damage that these storms have caused to homes, businesses, and the local infrastructure. I support the governor’s request and urge President Bush to quickly approve his request so that federal aid can be made available," said Moore.

Governor Graves made his request through Dick Hainje, Regional Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Last Thursday, Moore met with Hainje in Kansas City to discuss the damage and the possibility of federal assistance.

While some assistance for businesses and individuals may be available, it is more likely that aid will go to local governments to help with repairs to the area infrastructure. Information about what federal assistance could come as a result of a federal disaster declaration is available at FEMA’s disaster information website, a link to which is provided at http://www.house.gov/moore/.
