Cold Springs Fire near Mt. Adams: Fire information available on Inciweb

[Last Updated: August 29, 2008]

Some roads on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest remain closed due to road damage.  Please check our Current Conditions Reports or call the local Forest Service office for updates.

Spring / Summer Advisory: Some potentially unstable cornices (snow overhangs) remain on the crater rim of Mount St. Helens (please see Climbing page and scroll down to cornice photo for details). Flood and wind damage from Fall 2006 storms still affects access to some popular sites.  Please use caution when venturing out on roads and trails.

Loowit #216
Mount St. Helens NVM

Call ahead for current information.  The Loowit Trail #216 is a rugged and challenging trail for experienced hikers. This year several difficulties exist, which result in the trail being suitable for only the most adventuresome and competent trekkers. Due to washouts, access to the Loowit Trail #216 has been affected. Some hikers detour down slope to cross this feature.   There is flagging to help mark the way.  At the South Fork Toutle the trail is difficult to follow due to erosion and deposition in the flood plain, thick brush and sloughing.  People are crossing down stream and hiking back up to the Loowit.   Flagging helps mark the way.  We are advising hikers not to cross the Blue Lake mud flow gully located roughly 2.5 miles from the Butte Camp Trail 238A and the Loowit Trail 216 Jct. due to steep washouts and unstable terrain. Hikers can expect down trees, washouts and the trail may be difficult to see and/or follow. Crossing steep gullies may require extra care and time. Due to these issues we have been discouraging hikers from attempting this trail unless they are experienced on the Loowit Trail or highly skilled and experienced.

      29.1

07/14/2008: Snow.
Although geologists say the probability of an eruption generated debris flow or mudflow leaving the crater is small, Mount St. Helens hikers need to exercise caution when crossing gullies and streams draining the mountain, especially on the north side. Volcanic Hazards: We recommend that hikers in the Spirit Lake Basin on the north side of the volcano, who observe a large steam or ash emission or hear a rumbling noise upstream (sound of a mudflow or debris flow) be aware of potential hazards from debris flows and mud flows. If you are in a gully or stream draining the north side of the volcano and observe a large volcanic event please act decisively and move to high ground as soon as possible. Rough Trail Conditions: The Loowit Trail #216 and Truman Trail #207 trails have received no hiking traffic and have had little trail maintenance over the last 18 months. Hikers should be prepared for steep, unstable scrambling when crossing gullies and streams as well as narrow, uneven tread. In some areas, the trail is difficult to see and follow. Rock cairns and wooden posts will aid visitors through challenging route finding sections.

06/23/2008: Snow.
