Chairman Gordon celebrates the first day of issuance of the new American scientists stamps with U.S. Postmaster General Jack Potter.

In honor of America’s scientific achievements of the 20th Century, Chairman Gordon joined the Postal Service today in celebrating the first day of issuance of the second series of American Scientists stamps.
The new American Scientists stamps, issued on March 6, 2008, acknowledge the scientific contributions and achievements of John Bardeen, Gerty Cori, Edwin Hubble, and Linus Pauling. John Bardeen, a theoretical physicist and co-inventor of the transistor, collaborated on the first fundamental explanation on superconductivity, and was awarded two Nobel Prizes in physics. Gerty Cori, a biochemist, discovered a new derivative of glucose which lead to understanding and treating metabolic diseases, such as diabetes. Edwin Hubble, an astronomer, made significant contributions in deciphering the nature of the universe, such as proving the existence of galaxies other than our Milky Way. Linus Pauling, a structural chemist, determined the nature of chemical bond linking atoms into molecules and discovered new findings in protein structure, such as classifying sickle cell anemia as a molecular disease.
