WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Rep. Charlie
Melancon supported life today by voting against H.R. 2560, a bill that would
allow the creation of cloned human embryos for use in research. Rep.
Melancon, who is pro-life, made the following statement:
"I am adamantly opposed to human cloning, no matter what
the purpose," said Rep. Melancon. "This bill is not an
anti-cloning bill at all, but rather a clone-and-kill bill that requires cloned
embryos to be destroyed after they have served their purposes in a lab.
As someone who supports a culture of life, I could not vote for this bill."
"I and most Americans believe that the United States
needs a comprehensive ban on cloning to create human embryos, regardless of
what they might be used for. Many other countries - including France, Germany
and Canada
- already have such a ban. The United States needs to catch up and
once and for all ban this nightmarish practice of cloning human life."
