Heritage Program

Passport in Time

Passport in Time (PIT) is a volunteer program of the USDA Forest Service. PIT provides opportunities for the public to work with professional archaeologists and historians on national forests across the country. Projects include diverse activities such as archaeological excavation, survey, oral history, or historic structure restoration. There is no registration fee.

Since 1992, 329 volunteers have participated in 17 different Passport in Time projects on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest (see below). In conjunction with the 2005 Forest Service Centennial, we will host an archaeological project to document the site of an early ranger station:

Historical Archaeology at Little White Salmon Ranger Station

May 13-15, 2005

Hisotoric MapUsing “rediscovered” documents found at the National Archives, archaeologists relocated the site of the Little White Salmon Ranger Station in 2004. No structures remain, but a range of subsurface artifact material was identified in preliminary probing. Originally a homestead cabin built about 1894, the ranger station was used seasonally by Forest Service guards between 1908 and 1929. No photographs of the cabin exist, and aside from a few documents, little is known about the use of the site. To better understand its history, archaeological survey, mapping, and test probing will be conducted at the site in the spring of 2002. Through the national Passport in Time public archaeology program, volunteers can join Forest Service archaeologists in the exploration.

No previous experience is necessary to participate. Training will be provided by project staff. Camping will be available on-site. Volunteers must commit to all three days of the field project.

Questions? Contact Rick McClure at (509) 395-3399. You may apply through the Passport in Time Clearinghouse at 1-800-281-9176. On-line application forms can be found at: www.passportintime.com. The application deadline for this project is February 15, 2005.
