U.S.-EU Summit: Advancing Energy Efficiency, Economic Development and Environmental Goals

The U.S. and the EU share common goals of promoting strong economic growth and improving energy security and the global environment. We have worked to achieve them through the International Energy Agency, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the G-8, the Bonn "Renewables 2004" Action Plan, and the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

At this Summit, we agreed on the importance of developing the clean and affordable energy technologies that will help developing nations meet their energy needs, grow their economies and improve their quality of life, while stemming deforestation and the production of greenhouse gases. We will continue to improve and deploy the current generation of lower-emission technologies – including civilian nuclear power where appropriate – and cleaner, more efficient fossil fuel energy sources.

To meet these challenges, we will focus our activities on deploying clean and efficient technologies through the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum, as reliance on using coal for electricity continues. We will promote renewable energy through the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), and advance development of affordable, reliable and efficient hydrogen powered vehicles through the International Partnership for a Hydrogen Economy (IPHE) in preparation for the hydrogen economy of the future. Through the Generation IV International Forum, the U.S. and various Member States will develop the next generation of clean, safe and proliferation-resistant nuclear energy systems. Through the Methane to Markets Partnership, we will capture methane for use as a clean-burning source of energy.
