Congressional Report Finds Lack of Formal Language Training May Pose Problems in Fighting the War on Terror

WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic staff of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security issued a report illustrating the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency’s (ICE) inability to support homeland security efforts to protect the nation from potential terrorist attacks.

The report entitled, “Decision Eliminating Spanish and Other Language Training for ICE Investigators Was a Mistake,” underscores the vulnerability of the American public stemming from the Department of Homeland Security’s failure to fully prepare its ICE agents to fight the war on terror. Many individuals ICE agents encounter when conducting investigations are non-English speaking people. Currently, formal foreign language training is required by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency.
