Our primary mission is to serve an protect American workers, prepare them for new and better jobs, and ensure the adequacy of America's work places. In serving and protecting workers, the Department of Labor ensures workers' rights, inspects work sites, shields workers from employment discrimination, administers unemployment insurance programs, collects and analyzes economic data; protects pension benefits and enforces workers' compensation and wage standards. Our History...
In the early 20th century, deplorable working conditions, child labor abuses, and lack of wage protection were just some of the issues that prompted the creation of the U.S. Department of Labor. In 1913, Congress created the Department as an agency dedicated to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the American worker. This marked the culmination of nearly half a century of public demand for an agency that would be devoted exclusively to the welfare of American workers. The Department has been dedicated to helping workers adapt to the ever-changing conditions of the economy and the work place.

and Our Future...
As we face the new challenges of the 21st century, we need your talent, imagination, and dedication to public service to continue our tradition of excellence in serving the American people. If you want to be where the action is, if you want to have a part in reshaping the American work force of the 21st century, your place is with the Department of Labor.
