Panel Seeks Answers on Nuclear, Cyber Security
- Letters to Homeland Security Department, GAO -
WASHINGTON - The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Friday sent letters to the Department of Homeland Security and the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
The committee questions the Department of Homeland Security’s cost-benefit analysis in purchases of radiation detection portal monitors. Specifically, the committee asks why certain key tests conducted at the Nevada Test Site weren’t included in the final analysis by the department’s Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO). In the letter, the committee also asks GAO to continue auditing the testing, deployment and selection of equipment by DNDO.
The committee also asked GAO to review the Department of Energy’s (DOE) cyber security programs and provide a report.
After a major cyber attack in 2005 removed detailed personnel information on more than 1,500 employees of the National Nuclear Security Administration, DOE presented a plan to upgrade the department’s cyber security program. However, 12 months later, it’s unclear whether the program is working due to another major cybersecurity breach at Los Alamos National Laboratory late last year.
