Deputy Secretary Negroponte: Travel to Africa

U.S. Committed To Dealing With Humanitarian Tragedy in Sudan Deputy Secretary Negroponte (Apr. 18): "I think that there is no greater supporter of the people of Sudan than the Government of the United States. Just to give you one example of the extent of our commitment in dealing with the humanitarian tragedy in that country, we have given $1 billion each year in the years 2005 and 2006 to provide humanitarian assistance and food to the stricken people of Darfur. I would also say that we are strong supporters of the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement that was signed in May of 2006."

Deputy Secretary Negroponte traveled to Sudan, Chad, Libya and Mauritania April 11–19, 2007. The focus of the trip was the crisis in Darfur and ongoing efforts to achieve peace in Sudan through implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement and the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. In Mauritania, he attended the inauguration of President-elect Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikk Adellahi and met with African leaders. Accompanying the Deputy Secretary was Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs Jendayi Frazer and Senior Director and Special Assistant to the President for African Affairs at the National Security Council Bobby Pittman, Jr. Representatives from the Department of Defense and USAID joined the traveling party in Sudan and Chad.
