Giving the Environmental Workforce of Tomorrow a Green Light
To ensure a healthy future for all Americans, EPA is off and running in the race to develop a well-trained and diverse environmental workforce. EPA awarded 98 research fellowships in 2007 for students pursuing degrees in environmental studies through the Agency’s Science to Achieve Results (STAR) and Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) programs.

America will face enormous environmental challenges in the coming years, and there is a shortage of students, particularly minority and females, pursuing degrees in environmental sciences. Inside EPA Article Focuses on Biomarker Grant Recipients
An Inside EPA article focuses on a recent STAR biomarker grant issued to Clark University to use models to derive a developmental reference dose and/or acceptable daily intake for the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos. The grant award to Clark was one of five grants awarded recently under the EPA STAR program to develop computer models that can match biomarkers with exposure and/or dose for many chemicals including chlorpyrifos, diazinon, parathion, carbaryl, perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS).

Bioengineering for Pollution Prevention Through Development of Biobased Materials and Energy
EPA has published a state-of-the-science report that examines scientists' understanding of plant-based alternatives to petroleum for materials and energy. Entitled, "Bioengineering for Pollution Prevention Through Development of Biobased Materials and Energy," the report looks at the progress made towards using plants and plant oils for plastics and fuels as well as the challenges for using these alternatives on scales large enough to meet society's needs and still protect the environment.

NCER Launches new Endocrine Disruptors Research Web Site
NCER has launched a new science topics page about the endocrine disruptors research funded under the STAR grants program. These Endocrine Disruptor Research pages describe the multidisciplinary projects awarded to improve our understanding of EDC sources, fate and transport, exposures, biomarkers, and effects on individuals and populations. The aim of this research is to provide improved methods, data, and models that will lead to improved hazard assessments and reduced uncertainties in ecological and human risk assessments for EDCs.

NCER Launches Children's Environmental Health Website
NCER has launched a new web site to relay research results from a network of STAR centers for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research. The centers were established to explore ways to reduce children's health risks from environmental factors. The program is jointly funded by the EPA, through the Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grants program, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) with additional expertise and low-cost laboratory services provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Troubled Waters For Our Sea Creatures
CBS News featured research by an NCER STAR funded team at the University of Southern California's Caron Lab and interviewed marine biologist Astrid Schnetzer.
