Deadline Nears For Recovery Funds; Disaster Assistance Tops $25 Million

Birmingham, AL -- With less than three weeks remaining to apply for disaster recovery assistance, Alabamians who suffered property losses in this year's floods and tornadoes have received $25.5 million in federal and state disaster recovery assistance.

The deadline to apply for state and federal programs designed to help people in Alabama's 38 disaster-designated counties is at the close of business, Friday, July 11, 2003.

To date, 12,976 homeowners, renters and businesses have called the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration numbers. The numbers to apply and to check on the status of applications are 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. The lines are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Alabama counties designated as disaster areas are Baldwin, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Clarke, Clay, Cleburne, Colbert, Coosa, Cullman, DeKalb, Escambia, Etowah, Jackson, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Lee, Limestone, Macon, Madison, Marshall, Mobile, Monroe, Morgan, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Washington.
