WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement concerning her vote against H.R. 5429, a bill to open the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.

“Drilling in the Arctic Refuge, a pristine wilderness should be our last option, not our first.  We should not be so willing to sacrifice this unspoiled area for just six months of oil.

“To make matters worse, everyone knows this bill is dead on arrival in the U.S. Senate.  If the Republicans are serious about energy security they would offer up real solutions like increasing alternative fuels and making our cars and light trucks more fuel efficient.  That would not only increase our energy security, but help consumers at the pump.

“The Republicans need to stop wasting time with drilling in the Arctic Refuge proposals that go nowhere and get serious about our energy security."
