WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) today applauded the defeat of H.R. 6099, the so-called “Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2006.

“The defeat of this pointless bill signals the end of the era of divisive, ill-conceived legislation that did nothing to prevent unintended pregnancies and protect the reproductive freedom of women, DeGette said.  H.R. 6099 was opposed by more than 30 groups who work on protecting the reproductive health of women, including the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

“Under new Democratic Leadership of the 110th Congress, we will work to protect the health of women, reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and help support women who choose to  bear children in order to make sure that they and their families have access to quality pre- and post-partum health care.”

H.R. 6099 was defeated on the suspension calendar, where it needed a two-thirds majority to pass, by a vote of 250-162.
