Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Military Support Promoted to Lieutenant General

October 26, 2000

John H. Campbell (USAF), 53, the Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Military Support (ADCI/MS), was promoted to Lieutenant General today. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate on October 6. Director of Central Intelligence George J. Tenet hosted a ceremony at CIA this morning, during which United States Air Force Chief of Staff General Michael E. Ryan and Lieutenant General Campbell's wife, Marky, pinned on the General's third star.

In his role at CIA, Lieutenant General Campbell serves as Director Tenet's principal adviser on all military matters. He was appointed to this position on June 19, 2000.

During today's ceremony, DCI Tenet said Campbell "seeks out the tough missions and excels at performing them." Tenet added: "He brings to the table the experience and instincts of a customer of intelligence, and an impressive breadth of experience in the military and policy worlds."

Tenet called Campbell the "right man for this vital mission," pointing out that he recognizes the need for the US military to have the best intelligence in the world. The DCI also credited Campbell's work in actively pursuing ways to enhance collaboration between the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community since arriving at CIA.

Prior to becoming ADCI/MS, Lieutenant General Campbell served as Vice Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and Commander, Joint Task Force for Computer Network Defense (JTF-CND) in Arlington, Virginia. Lieutenant General Campbell is a native of Henderson, Kentucky.
