Mack: Democrats Continue to Press Empty Solutions to Energy Crisis

September 18, 2008 -

WASHINGTON - Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) chastised the House Democratic Leadership today for continuing to demagogue the nation’s energy situation while failing to allow the House of Representatives to vote on comprehensive energy legislation such as the American Energy Act.

This afternoon, the Democrat-led House passed H.R. 6604, the Commodity Markets Transparency and Accountability Act, which was designed to curb “excessive” speculation in the energy futures markets. However, handcuffing the free market would increase price volatility in the oil commodity market, potentially further driving up the price of oil and creating ripe conditions for chaos in the global marketplace.

Mack said:

“Earlier this week, the Democratic-led House passed a ‘smoke and mirrors’ energy bill that will do nothing to bolster our nation’s energy independence and security. And again today, the Democrats have offered another paltry solution to solving our energy crisis that runs counter to free markets and free enterprise.

“The Democratic Leadership should stop these political charades once and for all and get down to real business – by allowing a vote on the American Energy Act, a comprehensive bill that will help us achieve our short- and long-term energy goals by:

-- Opening our deep water ocean resources, Arctic coastal plain, and Western oil shale resources to oil and gas exploration;

-- Removing the bureaucratic red tape that hinders the construction of new oil refineries;

-- Providing tax incentives for businesses and families that purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles;

-- Eliminating the barriers to nuclear power production;

-- Permanently expanding the tax credit for alternative energy production, including wind, solar and hydrogen;

-- And promoting coal-to-liquids technology.

“The people of Southwest Florida and the nation can see straight through the Democrats’ political games. I urge the Democratic Leadership to listen to the American people and allow a vote on real measures that will in fact strengthen our ability to achieve lasting energy security and independence.”
