August 25, 2008 - Murtha: Local Programs Receive Federal Grants to Prevent and Reduce Youth Drug and Alcohol Abuse PDF  | Print |

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman John P. Murtha (PA-12) announced today that both the Armstrong-Indiana Drug and Alcohol Commission and the Washington Drug and Alcohol Commission will receive $125,000 in Drug-Free Communities federal grant monies to prevent and reduce drug and alcohol abuse among youth.

The Drug Awareness Prevention Partnership (DAPP), part of the Armstrong-Indiana Drug and Alcohol Commission, and the Washington Intervention Network (WIN), part of the Washington Drug and Alcohol Commission, were each awarded a $125,000 grant to (1) reduce substance abuse among youth in Armstrong and Indiana Counties and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in our community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse; and (2) establish and strengthen collaboration among private nonprofit agencies and government entities to support the efforts of community coalitions to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.

To achieve these goals, the DAPP will implement a series of media campaigns, town hall meetings and educational events.  The WIN will educate the community on youth substance abuse issues, strengthen public laws and organizational policies to better address substance abuse issues, and evaluate and implement programs within the community and schools.

“This funding will support community efforts to prevent and reduce substance abuse,” said Murtha.  “In turn, these efforts will help to keep our youth drug-free.”

These grants were provided by the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).  In total, 419 applications were reviewed and 199 new grantees were selected through a competitive peer review process.
