The primary emphasis of the We the People program is upon grant-making to scholars, teachers, filmmakers, curators, librarians, and others who submit proposals for projects that explore significant events and themes in our nation’s history and culture.

NEH grant programs and We the People

NEH invites We the People proposals in all of the agency’s programs and at all deadlines. Proposals are expected to meet the guidelines of the program that best fits the character of the project. A list of all programs and deadlines is available on the NEH website.

Proposals will be evaluated through NEH’s established review process and will not receive special consideration. The chairman reserves the right to determine which grants will be designated as We the People projects.

Special We the People grants

NEH has also created some new grant programs to help advance the goals of the We the People program. These include:

• We the People Challenge Grants in United States History, Institutions, and Culture are designed to help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for humanities activities that explore significant themes and events in American history.
• Two initiatives encourage the use of historic sites in professional development programs for educators on central themes and issues in American history, government, literature, art history, or other related subjects in the humanities:
  • Landmarks of American History and Culture: Workshops for Community College Faculty
  • Landmarks of American History and Culture: Workshops for School Teachers
• Two initiatives encourage the creation of interpretive programs for the general public at America’s historical and cultural organizations:
  • Family and Youth Programs in American History
  • Interpreting America’s Historic Places
• Grants for State Humanities Councils support efforts by each state’s humanities council to develop We the People programs appropriate for its place and its people.
• Picturing America is a program to help young people explore the course of American history through reproductions of some our nation's greatest art treasures."
• Each year, public and school (K-12) libraries can apply for a We the People Bookshelf, a free set of classic books based on themes central to American history and culture.
