WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (D-CO) announced today that she has requested $50 million in Federal funds for security costs for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.  As the senior member of the delegation, Representative DeGette was joined in this request by Representatives Ed Perlmutter (D-CO), John Salazar (D-CO) and Mark Udall (D-CO).

"Today, as Denver’s Representative, I have formally requested $50 million dollars in federal funds to ensure that our city and State have the money it needs to protect our residents and visitors during this historic event.  We face unprecedented security challenges in the post-9/11 world and we must take those challenges seriously.  This funding will make certain that Denver is able to provide the necessary security during this celebration of our democracy.

“The appropriations processes starts in the U.S. House of Representatives and I am working closely with the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, David Obey (D-WI) and the Ranking Member, Representative Jerry Lewis (R-CA), to ensure that we get the money we need.  The Convention will be the biggest event Denver has ever hosted.  The eyes of the world will be on the Mile High city and I will do everything in my power to ensure the safety of everyone involved.”
