Support Officers, also known as Deployed Support Officers (DSO), are
responsible for providing and coordinating the entire range of administrative
support services to the US Intelligence mission worldwide. They must be able to
acquire and tailor support services to fit the specific requirements of their
assigned location or component as a result of knowledge of both the customer's
mission and available administrative resources.
At junior levels, Support Officers usually provide service directly, or
coordinate requests for more complex support on behalf of a small overseas
location or component. At more senior levels, they are expected to be able to
directly supervise and implement the provision of integrated support services to
large locations, components or programs. Support Officers succeed in their work
through innovation, risk-taking and by building cooperative alliances between
mission partners and service providers to address increasingly rapid changes in
organizational priorities, resources and work processes.
Candidates must possess, develop and apply expertise in several of the
traditional administrative fields of logistics, human resources, budget and
finance, training, security, contract management, information management,
program management and change management. They must also demonstrate competency
in: adaptability/versatility; planning and organization; initiative; customer
service orientation; technical/professional knowledge of administrative
disciplines; oral and written communications; judgment/decision-making;
interpersonal effectiveness; individual leadership/influencing; and
self-development. In addition, DSO candidates must be willing and able to serve
anywhere in the field, or in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, as determined
by the needs of the mission.
Support Officers will spend their first year of employment in a combination
of classroom training and developmental assignments in the areas of Agency
procedures, personnel, budget and finance, logistics and security. Upon
completion of training and successful overseas temporary duty (TDY) assignments,
the individual will generally spend the next several years PCS (permanent change
of station) overseas. There will then follow a mixture of Headquarters and field
assignments, with an emphasis on gaining maximum experience in support of a
variety of Agency functions.
Minimum requirements include a BA or MBA, with an emphasis on
business, public administration, or personnel administration. (Other degrees
will also be considered.) Candidates must also be willing to serve overseas for
extended periods of time (2-3 years), and prior overseas living experience is
desirable, along with foreign language capability or a demonstrated aptitude to
learn a new language. Good problem-solving skills, interpersonal effectiveness,
personal resilience, potential supervisory talent and the ability to tolerate
ambiguity are also needed.
All applicants must successfully complete a thorough medical and
psychological exam, a polygraph interview and an extensive background
investigation. US citizenship is required.
To be considered suitable for Agency employment, applicants must generally
not have used illegal drugs within the last twelve months. The issue of illegal
drug use prior to twelve months ago is carefully evaluated during the medical
and security processing.
