Washington - Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) today urged the Defense Department (DOD) and major airlines to coordinate to end the practice of charging active duty servicemen and women for checked bags during official travel. If charges are to occur, a better system should be devised so soldiers do not have to pay up front and be reimbursed later; DOD should bear these costs.
“The last thing our soldiers need to be worrying about as they head off to combat is if they have enough money in their pocket for baggage fees,” said Costello, Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee. “While I know the airlines are facing tough economic times, I would hope such fees could be avoided altogether. If not, we have to figure out a better way than burdening our brave servicemen and women with paperwork.”
