Washington, D.C. – Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) is urging President Bush to immediately and substantially increase United States humanitarian aid to victims of the Bay of Bengal earthquake and tsunami. The earthquake -- which was the largest in the past 40 years and the 4th strongest in a century -- resulted in a tsunami that devastated parts of Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and other countries in Asia and Africa. More than 65,000 people have perished from the disaster and the death toll continues to rise as disease and hunger proliferate.

The list would be accessible to all cell phone users by dialing 411, but the concern is that the list could eventually be accessed by telemarketers.

Today, a high-level panel on reforming the United Nations proposed two models for enlarging the U.N. Security Council from 15 – 24 member nations.

Eliot Engel (D-NY) and a bipartisan group of 37 Members of Congress are calling on the Secretary of State to pull U.S. funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) until all known members of terrorist organizations are removed from the Agency’s staff. In addition, the House Members are calling for the firing of Peter Hansen, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, in light of his knowledge of and indifference to terrorists on UNRWA’s payroll.
