With Congressman Eliot Engel’s strong support, the House passed legislation to save 23 million American families, including over 38,000 in his Congressional District, from paying higher taxes because of the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). The Senate amendments to H.R. 3996, the Tax Increase Prevention Act, passed the House by a vote 352 to 64.

On Wednesday, December 19, the House of Representatives cast a strong bipartisan vote in favor of H.R. 4040, the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act. The legislation, of which Congressman Eliot Engel is a cosponsor, passed the House by a unanimous vote of 407 to 0.

The House today passed a bill by a vote of 411 to 3 which will extend the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (known as Child Health Plus in New York) through March 31, 2009 and provides additional funding to ensure that no children currently enrolled will be dropped from their coverage. The bill also blocks the scheduled 10.1% percent cut in Medicare physician payment scheduled for January 1, 2008 and replaces it with a 0.5% increase through June 30, 2008.

Rep. Eliot L. Engel, a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, voted Tuesday for the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act (S. 2271) which will provide several tools to pressure the Sudanese government to once and for all put an end to the ongoing genocide in Darfur.

The Senate Thursday passed an energy bill with overwhelming bipartisan support, by a vote of 86 to 8, which will help move the United States toward energy independence. A significant part of the legislation was adapted from Congressman Eliot Engel’s proposals, which passed the House last week.
