U.S. Senator Jim DeMint

DeMint to Promote American Energy Freedom During Greenville Visit

August 13, 2008 - Columbia, S.C. - U.S. Senator Jim DeMint will continue his 4th Annual “South Carolina on the Move” Tour in Greenville on Thursday, August 14. DeMint will resume his tour of 14 cities throughout the state to discuss the need to take advantage of our own domestic energy resources. He will also recognize standout organizations and individuals who are working to make South Carolina a great place to live.

While in Greenville, Senator DeMint will provide the keynote address for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce Advantage Luncheon. He will also present a “South Carolina on the Move” award to GE Energy in recognition of its leadership in the field of power generation and energy delivery technologies. GE Energy’s business, which includes its manufacturing and engineering complex in Greenville, saw its profits soar 37 percent, to $1.2 billion, and revenue went up 35 percent, to more than $7 billion, during the second quarter of 2008. The company is also the leading U.S. supplier of wind turbines.

“GE Energy is a vital part of Greenville’s business community,” said DeMint. “GE has been one of the world’s leading suppliers of power generation technologies for over 100 years, and the local facility continues to exemplify this commitment to excellence.”

This year’s tour is focused on the need to increase American energy supplies. “The only way to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and lower prices at the pump is for America to rapidly pursue our own energy sources,” DeMint said. "America should remove barriers to a wide array of new energy supplies -- including hydrogen, wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, clean coal and even technologies we haven’t yet discovered. But the first step to lower energy prices is to allow the bans on offshore drilling and oil shale to expire on October 1st. This date, also known as American Energy Freedom Day, is vitally important to our nation’s future energy security.”
