Ranking Member Analyzes President’s FY 2007 Budget

“Budget ignores that local communities are the first and last line of defending our homeland. Cuts to programs leave america at risk”

WASHINGTON -- House Committee on Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the attached preliminary analysis of the President’s Fiscal Year 2007 Budget request.

“As this analysis demonstrates, the Administration’s pre-911 mindset ignores that securing our homeland is an integral and critical part of our national security efforts. As a result, the Department of Homeland Security, tasked with preventing and responding to a 9/11-type attack, receives 93 percent less than the Department of Defense in the proposed budget,” said Congressman Thompson.

“This budget shortchanges our homeland security efforts by woefully underfunding key programs that provide local communities with the resources to protect our borders, ports, mass transit, and critical infrastructure. Likewise, it cuts necessary funding to ensure that our police, firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders positioned on the frontlines have what they need to battle terrorism at home.”
