Casey Statement on Georgia-Russia Hearing

September 17, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC- Following the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on “Russia’s Aggression against Georgia:  Consequences and Responses,” U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement:

“Today’s hearing demonstrates the challenge posed by Russia’s territorial aggression last month against its small neighbor, Georgia.  The United States and Russia have many shared interests, not least the common agenda to secure nuclear materials and prevent further WMD proliferation to states like Iran and North Korea.  But we must make clear that Russia will pay a price for violating international norms.  The Administration’s decision to withdraw for now the proposed U.S.-Russia civil nuclear cooperation agreement and the suspension of bilateral military cooperation programs represent some initial consequences.”
