BOSTON- Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy today announced that UMASS Amherst will receive $890,419.22 as part of the National Center for Education Research Program. The funding will allow UMASS Amherst, together with the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), to develop and evaluate an internet based tutoring system in which students will be instructed individually in mathematics. The system is able to detect and respond to student emotions – such as boredom or frustration - in order to improve mathematics achievement by keeping students engaged in learning. The new system has been proved to dramatically increase student learning and motivation. “This is an investment in innovative ways to help our children learn. UMASS and CAST have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to developing and expanding state-of-the-art learning opportunities, and this additional support will help them level the playing field for all students,” said Senator Kerry. Kennedy spokesperson Melissa Wagoner said, “Excellence in math education is more essential than ever for the Commonwealth’s future, and with this federal grant, UMass Amherst will continue to develop state-of-the-art innovative strategies to improve student achievement.” ###
