Washington, Mar 28 -

Today U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (3rd Dist.-Texas) announced that McKinney North High School senior Nakita Vojnovich captured first place in the annual Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery.  Congressman Johnson will congratulate the top winners at a reception for all of the participants and their families on Saturday, April 5th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in McKinney.  This free art event will be open to the public and to the media.

The exhibit features works of art by high school students in the 3rd Congressional District, including Dallas and Collin Counties.  At the gathering, attendees will select the “People’s Choice” award.

An Artistic Discovery promotes attention to the arts by recognizing talented young artists from across the nation.  Nakita Vojnovich’s art will be on display for a year in the halls of the United States Capitol surrounded by art from winners of other participating congressional districts.

The winner, Nakita Vojnovich, created “Rapid Abridgement” with graphite pencil.  The McKinney North High School senior studies under teacher David Andrews.

Cindy Bai, of Plano, won second place with her work, “Yellow Rose of Texas” made with colored pencil.  A junior at Liberty High School in Frisco, Bai takes art with teacher Diane Bray.

A photograph, “Plain o’ Flag,” by Patricia Guthmann of Allen High School, placed third.  Guthmann, a junior, is a student of Susan Tadlock.

“Eve’s Choice” by Jonathan Widmer of Rowlett received honorable mention.  Widmer submitted a photograph and attends Rockwall Christian Academy.  The 10th grader studies under Elizabeth Kazos.

“The growing interest in this art competition both on the part of the talented young artists who submit their artwork and the supportive community is just amazing.  It’s exciting to see the talent of young artists in North Texas receive the attention and accolades they deserve,” said Johnson.
