California Wildfires


Summer lightning storms in mountains and desert areas have sparked fires across the state. More than 43 fires are currently burning throughout California. There are 23 fire complexes actively threatening life and property.

A total of 887,315 acres have burned. There are 18,571 personnel, 110 rotary aircraft, 1,104 engines, 447hand crews and 326 water tenders assigned to these fires. There have been 224 firefighter injuries reported.

101 homes, 138 outbuildings and one commercial property have been destroyed. Some 5,360 homes, 1,970 outbuildings and 97 commercial properties are threatened. Eight homes and five outbuildings have been damaged.

Federal Assistance:   Federal assistance is available for the following California counties: Butte, Mendocino, Santa Clara, Shasta, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Trinity Kern, Mariposa, Plumas and Santa Barbara.

Here is an overview of the largest fires:

Northern California Fires

LIME COMPLEX FIRE, TRINITY COUNTY:
The Lime Complex Fire is located in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Trinity County, 5 miles south of Hyampom.  This complex of 70 lightning-caused fires began at about 5 p.m. on June 20. 

A number of fires are located in remote areas with steep terrain, and little, or no access.
  • The fire is currently at 82,726 acres and is 62 percent contained.
  • One commercial property and one outbuilding has been destroyed.
  • There are 1,530 residences, 25 commercial buildings, and 309 outbuildings threatened.
  • The Yolla Bolly Middle Wlderness is closed until further notice.
  •  Weaverville Elementary School is on standby as a shelter.
  •  An animal shelter is located at the Trinity County Animal Shelter on Main Street in Weaverville.

LIGHTNING COMPLEX, SHASTA COUNTY:
This fire is located near Shingletown. It is at 82,536 acres and is 60 percent contained.

  • The Shasta County Emergency Operation Center has activated in support of this event. 
  • Five homes and 15 outbuildings have been destroyed.
  • Two homes and one outbuilding have been damaged.
  • Seventy homes are threatened.
  • Evacuated areas include the community of Shasta, in the area of Rock Creek Road and Iron Mountain Road.

AMERICAN COMPLEX , PLACER, YUBA, NEVADA AND SIERRA COUNTIES:  
The American River Complex fire is located in the Tahoe National Forest in Placer, Yuba, Nevada and Sierra counties.

  • The fire is at 19,322 acres and is 55 percent contained.
  • Two homes have been destroyed.
  • Five homes, 1 commercial property and 5 outbuildings are threatened.

 IRON COMPLEX, TRINITY COUNTY:

  • The fire is 47,066 acres and is 46 percent contained.
  • One outbuilding has been destroyed.
  • 477 homes, 50 commercial properties and 650 outbuildings are threatened.

SODA COMPLEX, MENDOCINO/LAKE COUNTIES

  • This fire is 8,317 acres and is 69 percent contained.
  • Two homes and two outbuildings have been destroyed.
  • Two homes and two outbuildings are threatened.

HELLS HALF COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT/TRINITY COUNTIES

  • This fire is 10,192 acres and is 35 percent contained.
  • There are mandatory evacuations for the Hyampom community -- affecting about 40 homes.
  • One home has been destroyed.
  • Fifty-six homes, three commercial properties and 38 outbuildings are threatened.

CUB COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT/TRINITY COUNTIES

  • This fire is 19,000 acres and is 78 percent contained.
  • 180 homes and 3 outbuildings are threatened.

SISKIYOU COMPLEX, SISKIYOU COUNTY

  • This fire is 39,750 acres and is 18 percent contained.
  • Twenty-five homes, one commercial property and 47 outbuildings are threatened.

UKONOM COMPLEX, SISKIYOU COUNTY

  • This fire is 22,926 acres and is 22 percent contained.
  • Thirty homes, two commercial properties and six outbuildings are threatened.

 CANYON COMPLEX, PLUMAS COUNTY:
 This fire is located in the Plumas National Forest in Plumas County. 

  • The fire is 32,352 acres and is 66 percent contained.
  • One home and two outbuildings have been destroyed.
  • 1,500 residences, 15 commercial buildings and 850 outbuildings are threatened. None have been destroyed.

  • Red Cross provides financial assistance for immediate needs such as food, clothing, and housing for those residents whose homes have been destroyed.  Call (866) 438-4636 or visit their website.

Federal Resources

  • FEMA provides financial assistance for personal property, home repair, rental assistance, transportaion, medical and dental assistance, and other needs.  Call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to apply for assistance or visit their website
  • Small Business Administration provides various types of loans for businesses of all sizes and homeowners and renters in the event of a disaster. This includes physical disaster loans, economic injury loans, military reservists' loans and home and personal property loans.  Call 1-800-659-2955 or visit their website
  • United States Postal Service can assist with redirecting mail to those who have lost homes or are unable to access them.  Call 1-800-ASK-USPS or visit www.usps.com.
  • Social Security Administration can assist fire victims with replacing lost Social Security cards or benefit checks. Call 1-800-772-1213 or visit www.ssa.gov.
  • Veteran's Administration can provide information regarding disruptions to VA service in Southern CA.   Call the national call center at 1-800-827-1000 or call the San Diego Patient Call Center at (858) 552-7475.  Also, visit the website for more information. 
  • Disabled American Veterans is providing assistance grants of up to $1,000 to service connected disabled veterans.  Call the San Diego Office at (619) 299-6916.
  • Internal Revenue Service provides information and assistance for claiming casualty losses.  Call 1-800-829-1040 or visit their website.  Victims of the California wildfires can also call their special hotline at 1-866-562-5227 to request free copies of federal income tax documents, 7 AM to 10 PM PST, M-F.
  • U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides short- and long-term housing assistance.  Visit their website for more information.
  • U.S. Passport Agency can help you obtain a new passport.  To do so, you must first report your passport as lost or stolen by completing a “Statement Regarding Lost or Stolen Passport”, Form DS-64. You can reach the Agency toll free at: 1-877-487-2778 (TTY 1-888-874-7793). Operators are available 6 a.m. to midnight, ET, Monday-Friday, excluding Federal holidays.
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services can answer question about immigration procedures, how to request replacement documents, or when any cancelled appointments will be rescheduled.  For assistance, call the National Customer Service Center (NCSC) at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 1-800-767-1833) or visit their website at www.uscis.gov.
  • National Personnel Records Center holds copies of military service and civilian employment records.  If you are a veteran or next-of-kin of a deceased veteran, you can visit www.vetrecs.archives.gov to order a copy of your military records.  For all others, please fill out "Standard Form 180."  Call: 314-801-0800; e-mail: MPR.center@nara.gov; or fax: 314-801-9195.
