TWIC Plagued With New Setbacks

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) detailed new concerns about the Transportation Security Administration’s Transportation Worker Identification (TWIC) program in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Specifically, the letter addresses substantial concerns about problems with the TWIC Helpdesk, which is meant to serve as the principal link between TSA and the more than 1 million transportation workers affected by the security program. Chairman Thompson released the following statement with the letter:
“This failure exposes yet another flaw in an already troubled program. The TWIC Helpdesk was established to be the primary means of communication between TSA and more than a million transportation workers. But the phones are ringing and nobody’s home to answer their questions. That’s a pretty fundamental failure if you ask me. The Department of Homeland Security must improve its oversight of this program if it hopes to salvage TWIC and prevent another contract management fiasco like Deepwater.”
