Iraq

After a misdirected military strategy over the last two years, the new counterinsurgency strategy to clear, hold and build has brought Iraqi citizens to our side in the fight against Al Qaeda and other Islamic terrorists.

Succeeding in Iraq is not only critical to the Middle East, but it is critical to our national security.  While we have made great progress in our fight against terrorism, Iraq is now the central battleground in that global war.

As Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee I understand the dangers of defeat.  Our intelligence services have warned us that if we withdraw from Iraq before their army and police can maintain security, violence and chaos will spread across the region.

So what would defeat in Iraq mean for Americans?  Our defeat in Iraq would give the terrorists who launched the 9-11 attacks a safe haven to export terror worldwide.  The mastermind of the September 11th attacks, Osama Bin Laden, said so himself.

With Iraq’s oil revenues, Al Qaeda terrorists would be able to fund their operations on an unprecedented scale, significantly increasing the threat of future attacks on the United States and our allies.

Defeat in Iraq would also embolden a nuclear-armed Iran – a country currently supplying troops and weapons to make the situation in Iraq worse.

I hope my colleagues remember the importance of Iraq to our national security over the coming weeks as Congress acts on legislation affecting our troops.
