Napolitano Supports DoD Authorization Bill
Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (D-CA38) voted for the Department of Defense authorization bill, H.R. 1588, which was passed by the House tonight. This bill authorizes a total of $400.5 billion in FY 2004 for defense activities – which is an increase of $7.6 billion over FY 2003. “At a time when we are all concerned with enhancing our national security and fighting terrorism, it is important that we take all necessary steps to keep our military the strongest in the world,” stated Napolitano.
“The bill also contains important, bipartisan provisions to provide better pay, housing and training for the men and women in uniform. I am so proud of those who serve in our nation’s armed forces and risk their lives and proud to support these provisions on their behalf. Their dedication to our country and our freedom deserves support,” the Congresswoman continued.
H.R. 1588 also authorizes funds for military modernization projects. “Maintaining our military’s status as the most technologically advanced in the world is a major priority. It will help ensure that our military actions are successful, and it will offer greater protection for our troops,” Napolitano commented.
The Congresswoman is particularly pleased that the bill contains a provision that she personally championed — to end sexual assault in our military academies. “The task force established by this bill will examine this issue and provide recommendations to the Secretary of Defense to ensure the safety of all female cadets, due process in all sexual violence cases, appropriate punishments for perpetrators, and health and counseling services for victims,” Napolitano concluded.
