Congressman Eliot Engel is chairing a hearing of his Western Hemisphere Subcommittee on “The Hurricanes in Haiti: Disaster and Recovery” to help that poverty-stricken island recover from a series of hurricanes which rolled over the island in the past several weeks.

Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee gave an update on the progress of the Paul D. Wellstone MD-CARE Act (H.R. 5265). His legislation would reauthorize research funding for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a fatal genetic disorder and the most common form of muscular dystrophy.

Congressman Eliot Engel’s legislation to crack down on multi-million dollar fraud by the telephone calling card industry, was unanimously passed by the Commerce Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Tuesday. His bill, the Calling Card Consumer Protection Act (HR 3402) would require calling card companies to disclose in clear language all terms, conditions and fees in their advertisements.
