Gas Prices and Energy Policy

The United States needs a comprehensive energy policy that focuses on supply, demand, capacity, and alternative sources. Over half of our oil consumption comes from imported sources. It is vital that we access domestic supplies to ensure adequate supply. That is why Congressman McHenry strongly supports developing the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. Another issue is capacity. The United States has not built a new refinery in over 20 years. Current refineries are operating at or near 100-percent capacity, meaning that any unexpected maintenance affects supply available to consumers. While addressing capacity and supply, we must also increase research and development into newer technologies and alternative energy sources that reduce consumption and pollution. The United States should lead the world in next generation technology that can provide for a cleaner environment, reduced reliance on foreign energy sources, and new industries that provide high paying jobs to future workers.
