Reid Statement on Memorial Day

May 23, 2008

Washington, DC—Nevada Senator Harry Reid made the following statement today in honor of Memorial Day, Monday, May 26:

"Our nation pauses today to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, revere those troops and their families who continue to sacrifice, and recommit ourselves to fulfilling our obligation to those who serve.

"As we recall with somber gratitude the generations of airmen, soldiers, sailors and Marines who have paid so heavy a price in service to their fellow countrymen – including the more than 700 who have fallen since last Memorial Day – we also look forward hopefully to the safe return of loved ones who will celebrate this solemn holiday in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world.

"Democrats remain committed to fulfilling our country's obligation to those who voluntarily answer the call of duty.  In the name of those brave troops who never lived to become veterans, I renew my pledge to keep our promises to all those who serve, including giving them the resources they need to succeed in battle and the support they need to succeed when they come home."
