LIEBERMAN PRAISES WALKER’S PUBLIC SERVICE

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Friday issued the following statement reacting to the announcement that Government Accountability Office Comptroller David Walker will resign effective March 12, 2008.

“David Walker has served his government, the American people, and his nation with great distinction for more than a decade as head of the federal government’s chief watchdog agency. The work produced under his leadership has not only been fair, non partisan, and of the highest professional standard. It has provided insight on some of the most difficult challenges facing government in the 21st Century and foresight on how to best solve these problems.

“As Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Senate’s chief oversight Committee, I have depended heavily on the expertise of the GAO staff to produce significant and substantial reports ranging from Hurricanes Katrina disaster relief, to improving government-wide financial management, to rebuilding Iraq.

“Our work has benefited greatly from David’s leadership, and so have the American people. His departure will be an enormous loss for all of us.

“I wish David the best of luck in the next phase of his career where he will continue to work on solutions to the most pressing issues of our time.”
