(McLean, VA)- Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) applauds the Soldiers, Civilians, andPhoto courtesy of the US Army Contractors of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) for creating armor for HUMVEEs that save soldiers lives and reduce injuries in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations around the world. Congressman Ruppersberger was on hand as members of the group were awarded the "Top Ten Greatest Inventions of 2004" by the U.S. Army on June 8th, 2005, at a special ceremony in McLean, Virginia.

"I praise the soldiers, civilians, and contractors at Aberdeen Proving Ground for their dedication and ingenuity creating this important equipment to help save lives and prevent injuries for our men and women in uniform serving their country in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world. We are fighting a new kind of war in Iraq and we need to utilize the latest in technology to help protect our military personnel abroad. I applaud the hard working Americans for working together to make this happen," said Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD).

The "Armor Survivability Kit" uses steel and ballistic glass to protect military personnel traveling in HUMVEEs from small arms projectiles and fragments from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Over 8,000 Armor Survivability Kits are being used around the world.

The Army says it recognizes the need for new technological ideas and systems to help fight "The War Against Terror." The U.S. Army created its "Top Ten Greatest Inventions" competition to acknowledge and enhance greater cooperation between the "Warfighter" and the Research and Development Communities within the military to save lives, prevent injuries, or increase readiness.
