Thompson Raises Concerns About Project 28 Acceptance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Friday, February 22, 2008

(WASHINGTON) – Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement on the acceptance of Project 28, part of the Secure Border Initiative (SBInet):

“The acceptance of a flawed Project 28 closes a difficult chapter for the Department. The poorly structured contract that prevented the line Border Patrol agents from pointing out obvious flaws and caused an over-reliance on contractors has resulted in a system that has been described as providing ‘marginal’ functionality at best. As the Department moves forward with implementation of SBInet, I would hope that they have learned from these mistakes.”
