Orlando, FL (August 21, 2007) - Congressman Jeff Miller (R-Fl-01) was presented with an award for his work in support of defense issues, particularly those related to improving the well-being of enlisted personnel and their quality of life. The "L. Mendel Rivers Award for Excellence” from the Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) is the Association's most prestigious form of congressional recognition.
"I am truly humbled to receive this award and pledge to continue to work hard for all of those who have worn this country’s uniform," Miller said. "I would like to thank the AFSA for this honor. I applaud their efforts on Capitol Hill and I look forward to continuing to work with them on improving services for our veterans."
The "L. Mendel Rivers Award for Excellence" is presented to the legislator the Association believes is most deserving of recognition. Recognition is based on active participation in military and veterans' issues, particularly those related to improving the well-being and quality of life of military enlisted members, veterans and their families.
The AFSA was founded at Bolling AFB, DC, on May 3, 1961. AFSA is an international organization dedicated to speaking out on behalf of the people behind the stripes and today, with nearly 130,000 members, AFSA has led the way on both Capitol Hill and in the Pentagon and has earned the recognition and respect of Washington's leaders for its sustained role as the "Voice of the Enlisted".
Miller’s efforts on behalf of service members, military retirees and veterans include his bill to increase the maximum coverage on servicemembers’ group life insurance and his pushing through Congress an increase in the minimum Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuity for surviving spouses aged 62 and older. Miller was also instrumental in increasing health care delivery by getting the Eglin AFB VA outpatient clinic and the Pensacola Joint Ambulatory Care Clinic (JACC) or “Superclinic” under construction.
"We have an obligation to the men and women who have served and defended our country," said Miller. "It is time for us to honor our commitment to those who have so proudly served this great nation and provide them the care they deserve. A promise made should be a promise kept."
