Washington, D.C. (February 10, 2005) - House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Steve Buyer (R-IN-04) today announced that U.S. Representative Jeff Miller (R-FL-01) has been appointed chairman of the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs.
“It is certainly a great honor to have the opportunity to serve as chairman of an important subcommittee that is so critical to our community,” said Miller. “I’m eager to work hard in this new capacity for our veterans and retirees.”
The Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs has legislative, oversight and investigative jurisdiction over compensation; general and special pensions of all the wars of the United States; life insurance issued by the Government on account of service in the Armed Forces; cemeteries of the United States in which veterans of any war or conflict are or may be buried, whether in the United States or abroad, except cemeteries administered by the Secretary of the Interior; burial benefits; and the Court of Appeals for Veterans’ Claims.
Since being elected to Congress in 2001, Miller has quickly established himself nationally as a strong advocate for veterans' concerns including his successful support for changes to concurrent receipt and his initiation of a greater co-sharing policy between the military and veterans' clinics. In 2004, Miller’s measure to end the “Widows’ Tax” by improving the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP), was signed into law.
“It is humbling to have the opportunity to serve those who have so proudly served this great nation,” Miller said. “I will work to ensure that we meet the needs for our disabled, injured, and indigent veterans.”
