Pakistani Elections: Will They be Free and Fair or Fundamentally Flawed?

On December 20, 2007, the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs held an oversight hearing into U.S. policy toward Pakistan with respect to the January 8, 2008, parliamentary elections.

Sen. Thomas A. Daschle, former two-time Senate Majority and Minority Leader, who recently coauthored a pre-election assessment report after he led a team to Pakistan on behalf of the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

Mr. Thomas E. Garrett, Regional Program Director, Middle East and North Africa for the International Republican Institute (IRI). IRI was awarded the election observer grant on behalf of the U.S. government and released a survey of Pakistani public opinion last week.

Mr. Mark L. Schneider, Senior Vice President of the International Crisis Group (ICG) and former Peace Corps Director. The ICG closely monitors events on the ground with its employees in Pakistan.
