(Washington, D.C.)- Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Maryland 2nd) introduced a resolution in Congress today congratulating and commending “Free Comic Book Day.” On Saturday, May 5, 2007, dozens of independently owned comic stores across the country will distribute free comic books to encourage reading.
“Free Comic Book Day is a unique event that promotes literacy and celebrates the unique American art form that comic books have become. Hopefully, reluctant young readers will pick up a free comic book this Saturday and begin a lifelong interest in reading,” said Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Maryland 2nd).
A growing number of school systems in Maryland are using comic books to teach narration, dialogue, and visual design. The fastest growing section of public libraries is the comic book “graphic novel” section.
