Visiting DC - Beyond DC
Washington, D.C., is only one of many interesting locations on the east coast. While making plans to visit our nation’s capital also keep in mind these other destinations. All of these places are within driving distance of Washington and many can be reached via train.

Nearby Cities

Annapolis, MD – Home of the United State Naval Academy, and once home to the nation’s capital, Annapolis offers history and other points of interest.

Baltimore, MD – The closest major city to Washington, D.C., Baltimore is very easy to reach either by car or the Amtrak MARC train. Major attractions include the waterfront, national sports team events, and the National Aquarium.

Delaware Beaches – If you and your family are interested in visiting an East Coast beach while in Washington, the nearest destinations are in Delaware. Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches are only miles apart. About three hours by car from Washington, both beaches are great spots to spend a day.

New York City, NY – New York City is the largest city on the eastern seaboard. Washington and New York are very well connected with buses, trains, and airplanes running between the two almost hourly. Please note that New York City is the most distant location from Washington on this list and should not be considered a day trip.

Philadelphia, PA – Another past home of the nation’s capital, Philadelphia is a central place in American history. No visit is complete without a visit to Independence Hall, a look at the Liberty Bell, and Ben Franklin’s old print shop.

National Parks & Historic Place

Shenandoah – Only 75 miles from Washington, Shenandoah provides visitors a glimpse at the ecology of the Appalachian Mountains. The park offers everything from day hikes to wilderness areas.

Monticello – The home of Thomas Jefferson is located near Charlottesville, VA. Visitors can tour the interior of the house and explore the grounds of the property, including its gardens and vineyards.

Montpelier – Located on the way to Monticello, Montpelier was the home of James Madison. The house is currently undergoing renovations, but visitors are still welcome. In addition to the tour, Montpelier is home to a center for the Constitution.

Gettysburg – The infamous battleground of the Civil War and later the backdrop to President Lincoln’s most famous speech, Gettysburg provides visitors with a glimpse into the past.

Antietam – A lesser known but important battle of the Civil War, Antietam ended one of the Confederate Army’s early pushes into the North and was a catalyst for the Emancipation Proclamation.
