  • Carol D'Amico has been formally sworn in as assistant secretary for vocational and adult education.

  • The Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) announced the availability of $5 million in FY 2001 funds for competitive grants under the Tech-Prep Demonstration Program (CFDA #84.353). The grants will enable eligible consortia to carry out tech-prep education projects that involve the location of a secondary school on the site of a community college, a business as a member of the consortium, and the voluntary participation of secondary school students. The full application package was published in the Federal Register. Completely electronic applications are an option for this competition through the Department's e-Application system, although proposals may also be submitted in a conventional paper format. June 20, 2001

  • The Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) announced the availability of $5 million in High School Reform State Grants. The purpose of the grants is to allow States to support efforts to improve academic performance and provide technical skills training. The Department expects States to award funds to local high schools, via their local educational agencies, who are either expanding or enhancing their high school improvement efforts. May 3, 2001

  • The Departments of Labor and Education have announced that six States (Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Utah and Vermont) are eligible to apply for Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Incentive grants. The six States qualified for incentive awards by implementing WIA Title I in 1999-2000 and meeting State performance levels established for both Adult Education and WIA Title I programs. States may receive these grants upon application by the Governor's office to the Secretary of Labor. Applications are due June 18, 2001. The announcement appeared in the May 3, 2001, edition of the Federal Register.

April 26, 2001

  • OVAE Deputy Assistant Secretary Rob Muller testified on the President's FY 2002 Budget Request to Congress on April 26, 2001. Read his testimony before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.
