Major Projects

Training Resources

Major project Oversight Managers will possess varying degrees of experience and training as they begin their assignment; therefore, the resources contained in this chapter are intended to include a broad range of suggested training needed to effectively administer and manage Major projects. The suggested training is also not intended to be an all-encompassing list, but will be expanded as Oversight Managers develop and learn about other training resources. As Oversight Managers attend specific training courses, it is requested that a copy of the evaluation be shared with the Major Projects Team, including comments on how the training course did or did not contribute to the Oversight Manager's competencies. This chapter will then be continually updated to include the most useful training. An important factor to keep in mind when deciding which training course to attend: some courses are more geared toward (or can be tailored toward) roadway construction, estimating, and management (as opposed to building or other industry). Much more useful information and application will be realized from these roadway-based courses.

The training courses are separated into the four core technical competency categories: Project Management, Financial Management, Contract Administration/Innovative Contracting; and Federal-aid Laws, Regulations, Policies, and Procedures. In addition, the Project Management category has been further separated into the traditional instructor-led type courses (Classroom) versus the electronic-learning (E-Learning) based courses. E-Learning is becoming a useful alternative to the traditional classroom-type courses in the Project Management field, due to many professionals seeking a Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification while still holding a full-time job. A few advantages of E-Learning include: 1) the ability to work at your own pace, including proceeding through new concepts more slowly and clicking past material already known; 2) the ability to be trained during non-working hours; and 3) personalized feedback from instructors, usually within 24 hours. The courses shown for Financial Management, Contract Administration/Innovative Contracting, and Federal-aid Laws are all the traditional classroom-type courses.

Brochures, course descriptions, and general information about the training courses can be accessed through the web sites listed. The Major Projects Team also keeps a collection of Project Management course catalogs. Selected courses from these catalogs have been included in this chapter.
