Ask an Astrobiologist
"Describe the conditions thought to be present on early earth (before life) and relate these conditions to the origin of organic molecules"
  1. Question

Is there any current research in cryogenics or suspended animation for long-term space travel?

In the late 1960s to early 1970s, NASA had a program in depressed metabolism. However, NASA eventually abandoned this program since the technology did not exist to make this a feasible option. Of course, suspended animation may seem almost standard technology in films such as 2001, Alien, and even Austin Powers, not to mention several sci-fi television series. However, technology still has yet to make this feasible for humans or animals. One expert in Gravitational Biosignatures at NASA Ames Research Center recommends further research in animal hibernation. In particular, bears may present us with some interesting study. During the winter months, these mammals go into a deep slumber while still maintaining a sufficient level of metabolism to keep their kidneys from shutting down. Clearly, our questions and curiosities concerning cryogenics have just barely begun to be explored.
