Luna 9 Flight Stage

Luna 9 Flight Stage
Date: 02.03.1966
The Soviet Union's Luna 9 lander rode to the moon aboard this flight stage.

The smaller Luna 9 lander made the first survivable landing of a human-made object on a body beyond Earth. The spacecraft performed flawlessly, touching down in the Ocean of Storms and sending back the first images ever taken from the surface of another planetary body.

Until Luna 9's landing capsule touched down on the Moon, it was unclear if an object would simply sink into deep dust.
