Biography of Brian P. Golden
Regional Director

Brian Golden was appointed New England Regional Director of the US Department of Health and Human Services on January 29, 2007. For the prior two years, he served as a Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy.

Brian is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of the Boston Latin School, Harvard College, and the College of William & Mary's School of Law in Virginia.

Brian served in the United States Army's Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1993 until 1996. He remains an officer in the United States Army Reserve where he holds the rank of Major. He returned to active duty three times after September 11, 2001, with service in Iraq, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the Pentagon. In 2005, Brian was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for service during combat operations in Iraq.

Brian won election four times to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, serving the Allston-Brighton neighborhood of Boston, and part of the town of Brookline, from 1999 until 2005. In the legislature, Brian helped to pass a major senior pharmacy benefit into law. As a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, he worked to fund programs for at-risk youth, developmentally disabled adults, and the elderly. For his work in the field of human services, he received "legislator of the year" awards from the Boston Center for Independent Living, the Massachusetts Adult Day Services Association, and the Jewish Community Relations Council.

In other legislative activities, Brian served as vice chair of both the Joint Committee on Government Regulations and the Joint Committee on Education, the Arts and Humanities. He was also a member of committees responsible for legislation affecting housing, transportation, and the judiciary.

From 2002 until 2004, Brian served as a Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, a major source of affordable housing funds in New England.
